Barbarians Rugby raised over $1600 for an opportunity to play rugby on Vancouver Island! Parents stocked up on tasty groceries in the Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser and raised money to help cover tournament costs at the same time. 

About Bow Valley Rugby Club

The Barbarians are part of the Bow Valley Rugby Club (BVRC), a non-profit youth rugby program that serves children, youth, and adults in Cochrane, Alberta.

Rugby is a social and competitive sport that develops not only fitness but lifelong friendships. The core values at the club are fun, sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, discipline, inclusivity and hard work.

The club commits to not expecting to win until the high school level. This allows coaches to focus activities around FUN and keep youth in the sport for longer.

Fundraising for Travel Tournaments 

This year, in February, 58 youth athletes and 8 coaches from the BVRC Barbarians had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver Island to participate in a tournament!

This opportunity allows athletes to travel together, play rugby against a world-famous school in Vancouver, take part in a tournament, bond as a team, sightsee and visit Rugby Canada.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young athletes to build lifelong friendships outside of their usual circles and learn where rugby can take them if they want to go pro.

In order to help cover some of the costs of this additional expense, BVRC Barbarians partnered with TeamFund to run a Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser.

Parents were able to stock up on delicious grocery staples to keep handy in the freezer while raising money for their upcoming tournament.

The fundraiser reduces fundraising stress because parents get to purchase something they were likely going to purchase at the grocery store anyway: burgers, chicken breasts, steaks, sausages, and more.

Since the fundraiser is online, parents could also easily share their fundraising store link with friends and family to raise even more!

The team was thrilled to raise over $1600 to help cover some of the costs of attending the tournament on Vancouver Island!

This opportunity allows athletes to compete at rugby on a new level, travel together, and engage in a unique team-building experience.

Lethbridge Rams Football Club has raised over $11,000 since 2021 with Bacon and Fill Your Freezer Fundraisers. The proceeds from these fundraisers help purchase new equipment for their athletes, like helmets and shoulder pads.

About Lethbridge Rams

Lethbridge Rams Football is a community-based football club based in Lethbridge, Alberta that serves youth from grades 3 – 9. Since its inception in 1968, Lethbridge Rams programming has developed into one of the most successful and respected minor football programs in Southern Alberta.

This success is thanks to the hard work of volunteers, coaches, parents, and players. Lethbridge Rams currently has three football programs. Atom Flag Football is their first program, serving kids in grades 3-5 as an introduction to football. Tackle football begins in the Peewee program for youth in grades 6-7. Their Bantam program serves youth in grades 8-9.

Upon completion of these programs, these amazing athletes are fed into high school football programs for young adults in Lethbridge.

The Rams Fundraise to Help Purchase New Football Equipment 

We had the opportunity to speak with Bantam Coach and Treasurer of Lethbridge Rams, Justin, who helps organize the football clubs’ annual TeamFund food fundraiser.

An avid football lover, Justin joined the organization in 2019. He loves being able to give back to the sport he played for a number of years in his youth, prior to coaching.

Currently, the Rams rent their football equipment from the city, such as jerseys, helmets, and shoulder pads. One of their current major fundraising goals is to purchase their own football equipment to support their programming.

In 2021 and 2022, the club raised over $8,000 in two years towards their goal. 

This year, the club decided to try the Fill Your Freezer, brand new to Southern Alberta and raised over $3200 in their most recent fundraiser.

Bulldogs Football Association has raised over $14,700 with TeamFund Fundraisers since 2021 for equipment, field rentals, player assistance, and more!

About The Bulldogs 

The Bulldogs Football Association is a non-profit organization in Calgary serving the southwest with competitive football programming for youth ages 8 – 18.

The program began in 1978 out of the Southwood community. It was founded by a group of parents, led by Bantam Head Coach Art Marche. Rich in history, the club has supported over 1,200 athletes with only three Bantam coaches in its lifetime. A few of their players have played professionally, including Alumni Mark Dewitt, currently playing for the Calgary Stampeders.

The Bulldogs Football Association was incorporated on October 3, 2007 (Happy Birthday Bulldogs!) and is staffed solely by volunteers. Currently, the club supports 180 – 200 young athletes each year through Atom, Peewee, Bantam, and Spring Football programming.

Supporting 180+ Athletes Annually Requires A Lot of Fundraising

The Bulldogs run several fundraisers every year to cover the costs of running a high-quality football program. They run bottle drives as a team-building activity for the Bantam year-end banquet, sell tickets to liquor baskets, run food fundraisers with TeamFund, and recently ran a Black & Gold Gala event with a silent auction.

We had the opportunity to speak to the current Bantam Team Manager, Sheri, during their recent TeamFund Fundraiser delivery. Sheri started with the club in 2010 and has held many roles over the years: from team manager at various levels to vice president to treasurer.

The Bulldogs raised over $2800 in their most recent fundraiser, selling Coco Brooks and Simple Simons. Sheri was happy to see it was well-received, as they were trying out a new vendor.  

TeamFund Fundraisers are repeatable. Typically, the Bulldogs run 2-3 TeamFund fundraisers per year, favouring the Fill Your Freezer for its grocery staples and commonly requested bacon.

The Rewards of Youth Football Programming

Sheri prefers to be on the field with the kids, so she loves how easy and practical the fundraisers are. While fundraising is necessary, the best part of being part of the Bulldogs organization for Sheri is supporting the athletes.

Aside from athletic skills and physical abilities, the sport of Football provides an incredible opportunity for personal development. Many players learn to have self-confidence, respect for others, commitment and dedication.

“It’s pretty cool to watch them grow up. And to run into them on the street or in a mall or something and they come and they run and give you a big hug.”

Many athletes start in the Atom program at age 8, and if you can keep them engaged throughout, you get to watch them grow for 10 years, as they enter Bantam and Spring programming at age 15-18.

On a crisp autumn morning, I arrived at the Bulldogs’ delivery for their recent TeamFund fundraiser to find seven excited volunteers already stacking boxes. 

The delivery took place at their home field garage at Our Lady of Peace in Calgary (side note: with a beautiful mural that mimicked the excitement in the air!) 

I had the opportunity to speak to the current Bantam Team Manager, Sheri, about the amazing work they do for youth in the area.

Foothills Eagles: Doing What Works.

The Foothills Eagles is a full-contact football club for boys and girls aged 8-15.

Formed in 2010, the club provides football for kids in Foothills County, which includes Okotoks, High River, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Millarville, Blackie, Nanton, Longview, Aldersyde, Priddis and DeWinton. 

For 3 years, Steve Seiler ran the “Fill Your Freezer event” every fall. He even left us this kind testimonial before passing on the torch!

When the time came, the torch was passed along to an eager parent, Jason Danard. 

Jason was keen on the job and wanted to set an even bigger goal for the club.

This successful group has changed 3 times over the last couple of years, but this hasn’t hampered their fundraising results at all! The Foothills Eagles have raised over $14 700 since the fall of 2019!

The Wildcats Football Club Runs Fundraising Twice a Year with TeamFund.

Pride, Courage, Intensity:  This is the motto for the Calgary Wildcats Football Club.

Made up of players from the western edge of Calgary, this group embodies hard work and perseverance. However, times are tough for a lot of people in the city. With a depressed economy, it’s harder than ever for families to pay for youth sports.

About 1 out of every 10 Wildcats players require some kind of fee assistance each season.

Yet they have never had to turn a player away due to financial hardship.

The Wildcats need to bring in a certain amount every year to keep fees from rising.

“Equipment, field rentals, and operating expenses are always going up. By fundraising we keep our members fees from rising and keep player participation growing. We don’t want to turn anyone away.  We ask for all our families to get involved in the fundraising at some level, if not we require an “opt out” cheque. “

Like most youth sports programs, the Wildcats are a non-profit organization.

In order to keep fees reasonable and help out families in need, they do a variety of different kinds of fundraising.

We met them when they were searching for a better way to raise money without adding more work to their already very full plate.

Easy to Share with Supporters 

Like our other groups, Shana says the Wildcats appreciate how easy it is to share a link online. Whether it’s posted on Facebook or sent in an email, it takes the work out of it.

Parents are so busy these days.  Make fundraising as easy as sharing a link, and more people will participate in the campaigns. This, of course, means better profits.

By having most of the process done online, costs stay low and make life easier for both organizers and supporters.

Supporters click on the link you send them, and they come right to your team’s store.

From there, they can get product information and make their purchases.

Shana and the rest of the committee make sure the coaches and managers keep promoting the fundraiser and watch sales come in on their webpage.

When the fundraiser ends, Shana receives detailed sales summaries, so she knows who’s participated and better yet, who hasn’t.

To date, TeamFund Fundraising has helped the Calgary Wildcats raise an astonishing $80,000 and counting.
