Barbarians Rugby raised over $1600 for an opportunity to play rugby on Vancouver Island! Parents stocked up on tasty groceries in the Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser and raised money to help cover tournament costs at the same time. 

About Bow Valley Rugby Club

The Barbarians are part of the Bow Valley Rugby Club (BVRC), a non-profit youth rugby program that serves children, youth, and adults in Cochrane, Alberta.

Rugby is a social and competitive sport that develops not only fitness but lifelong friendships. The core values at the club are fun, sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, discipline, inclusivity and hard work.

The club commits to not expecting to win until the high school level. This allows coaches to focus activities around FUN and keep youth in the sport for longer.

BVRC also emphasizes the importance of safety in the sport and strives to keep its programs affordable, inclusive, and accessible. Did you know that Rugby is one of the most affordable sports in Cochrane?

Fundraising for Travel Tournaments 

This year, in February, 58 youth athletes and 8 coaches from the BVRC Barbarians had the opportunity to travel to Vancouver Island to participate in a tournament!

This opportunity allows athletes to travel together, play rugby against a world-famous school in Vancouver, take part in a tournament, bond as a team, sightsee and visit Rugby Canada.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young athletes to build lifelong friendships outside of their usual circles and learn where rugby can take them if they want to go pro.

In order to help cover some of the costs of this additional expense, BVRC Barbarians partnered with TeamFund to run a Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser.

Parents were able to stock up on delicious grocery staples to keep handy in the freezer while raising money for their upcoming tournament.

The fundraiser reduces fundraising stress because parents get to purchase something they were likely going to purchase at the grocery store anyway: burgers, chicken breasts, steaks, sausages, and more.

Since the fundraiser is online, parents could also easily share their fundraising store link with friends and family to raise even more!

The team was thrilled to raise over $1600 to help cover some of the costs of attending the tournament on Vancouver Island!

This opportunity allows athletes to compete at rugby on a new level, travel together, and engage in a unique team-building experience.
