We visited G&G Thunder Hockey team in Yellowknife, NWT for their recent Fill Your Freezer fundraiser delivery. (Yes, we deliver to NWT!) Learn how this hockey team uses food fundraising to help offset travel and tournament fees. 

About G&G Thunder Hockey

G&G Thunder Hockey is one of the U11 Development teams that are part of the Wolfpack Yellowknife Minor Hockey Association (Yes, we deliver all the way to Yellowknife!)

We are always so excited when we get the opportunity to visit out-of-town deliveries. Travel is a thing of the North, with their hockey teams travelling for tournaments a few times a year. 

The club focuses on developing hockey skills in young players through coaching, practices, and tournaments and provides a fun team atmosphere for young players. Their community arena comes alive for their players, and hockey parents excitedly gather to watch the games. Team sports are a great way to keep families engaged in the community. 

Fundraising to Help Offset Travel & Tournament Fees

When you travel as a team, you’re a team. You are not going to leave the goalie behind just because they can’t afford the plane ticket!

Running a sports team isn’t easy, and it definitely isn’t free. The Yellowknife Minor Hockey Association does their best to keep hockey affordable with initiatives like the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, deferring fees, and local community drives to donate hockey equipment.

For the last 2 years, the G&G Thunder Hockey team has worked with TeamFund Fundraising to help raise money to cover tournament costs. 

For a team like G&G Thunder, living in a remote town with a population just shy of 20,000, travel is a regular part of their competitive hockey season. The team works hard to raise money to help cover the cost of airfare, hotels, and gear for tournaments in Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, and other locations.

Raise Money for the Team with Practical Grocery Staples 

Another challenge of smaller towns is the limited fundraising options. Purdy’s Chocolates are a seasonal favourite, but there’s only so much chocolate you can sell until you exhaust the sweet tooths.

Often, people who purchase these items are doing so just to support your cause. While that’s an excellent reason, G&G Thunder loves TeamFund because our food fundraisers sell practical items that people actually want to buy!

Last year, G&G Thunder tried TeamFund’s Bacon Fundraiser with exciting results! Families were thrilled to purchase bacon, an item that many people like to keep stocked for weekend breakfasts or a salty pick-me-up.

The team travelled out of the NWT to play against some of the best teams in Alberta and British Columbia. To offset travel costs for the team, G&G Thunder raised over $2400 with bacon fundraising. 

A No-Brainer for Small Town Fundraising

When we visited their delivery this year, parents were excited to receive their products. The team stepped it up with a Fill Your Freezer fundraiser, adding items like chicken breasts, burgers, perogies, and bacon-wrapped scallops to their food fundraiser.

At their recent delivery, parents were so excited to pick up practical grocery staples that they purchased for cheaper than the grocery store AND will help their kids get to travel for hockey. The product practically sells itself and it’s become a no-brainer addition to the teams’ fundraising strategy.

This year, G&G Thunder was able to raise over $3000 towards tournament fees, exceeding the amount they raised last year!

Bear Necessities has raised over $26K with TeamFund’s food fundraisers since 2020 for classroom learning tools. Bear Necessities is the Student Advisor Council for Pat Hardy School, and their fundraisers have helped fund books, sensory pads, and a therapy dog!

About Bear Necessities of Pat Hardy Elementary School

Based in Whitecourt, Alberta, Pat Hardy Elementary School supports students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5. Guided by the motto “Always Learning. Learning All Ways,” the school is committed to fostering each child’s success in a safe and inclusive learning environment.

The teachers at Pat Hardy are lifelong learners who stay up-to-date on research focused on how children learn. Their goal is to impart not only knowledge but also confidence and a growth mindset to their students. To keep pace with innovative teaching practices, the school looks to their Student Advisor Council (SAC), Bear Necessities, to help fundraise for new learning tools each year.

Bear Necessities: Student Advisor Council Supports Elementary School Fundraising Efforts

We had a conversation with Clare, the current chair of Bear Necessities, who has been part of the SAC for three years. Passionate about connecting with fellow parents and supporting school learning initiatives, Clare is one of five dedicated parent board members who meet monthly. The SAC collaborates with the school to identify needs and set fundraising goals. 

In the past, initiatives have funded resources like books and sensory pads. This year, the big goal is to raise funds for a new therapy dog, which supports students’ social and emotional learning. With their current dog set to retire soon, the anticipation for a replacement is in the air!

The SAC organizes several fundraisers throughout the year. Last year, their fundraisers included chocolate and cookie dough. This year, they are partnering with a local greenhouse in the spring for a flower fundraiser.

While chocolates and flowers are fun and seasonal, one fundraiser Bear Necessities returns to year after year is TeamFund’s food fundraisers. Parents get to stock up on groceries knowing that up to 20% of their purchase directly contributes to the school’s success – it’s a win-win! 

The Power of Consistency: TeamFund’s Impact on Bear Necessities’ Fundraising Success

Bear Necessities discovered TeamFund in a local Whitecourt Facebook group, and since their first Bacon Fundraiser with TeamFund in 2020, they haven’t looked back!

Over eight successful fundraising campaigns, they have raised over $26,000 for the school to fund learning tools. Recently, they decided to switch things up for the new Southern Alberta Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser.

TeamFund takes care of setting up an online store, tracking payments, generating reports, and organizing the delivery. Clare loves that it is easy for parents to order online and pick up their food from the school after the fundraiser.

Aside from five dedicated board members, many vital parent volunteers help run fundraising efforts and events throughout the year. One of the benefits of TeamFund is there are only a few volunteers needed for delivery day:

Stettler Hockey has raised over $28K in 3 years with tasty and profitable bacon fundraisers.  This year, they raised half of their annual fundraising goal in just one campaign!

About Stettler Minor Hockey Association

Stettler Minor Hockey Association (SHMA) shows that small towns can bring on the bacon! Despite a population just shy of 6000, Stettler is making its mark in competitive hockey.

One recent achievement of the association is having one of their alumni players drafted into the NHL. Daylan Kuefler played for Stettler in his youth, then the Kamloops Blazers, and in 2022 was drafted to the New York Islanders. 

With over 20 teams, the association supports youth athletes aged 5 – 17 in their hockey skill development.

Not only that, but their home rink, Stettler Recreation Centre has hosted several tournaments for Northern Albertan teams.

Behind the success of their hockey association are many dedicated volunteers: board members, coaches, and parents, and more.

Hockey is a hugely exciting sport with a strong community and it shows in Stettler. SMHA is able to combine the love of hockey and bacon into fundraising dollars to keep programming affordable for families.

Keeping Minor Hockey Affordable with Bacon Fundraising

We had the opportunity to chat with Tersha, Stettler Hockey’s current Fundraising Director.

Hockey can be an expensive sport and it’s Tersha’s job to find ways to raise money for ice time, equipment, jerseys, tournaments, referees, player development and any other administrative costs that may come up throughout the season.

Tersha has been with the club for 7 years and her son plays U13B. She has supported the club through several positions over the years and loves the opportunity to interact with other parents and be involved in decision-making and organizing as part of the board.

Stettler Minor Hockey has run three Bacon Fundraisers with TeamFund, but this year was Tersha’s first time leading the fundraiser: 

“It was fantastic. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The quality of the product was amazing and the delivery was on time. The communication from TeamFund was great and the fundraiser was well-coordinated!”

TeamFund Makes Fundraising Easier!

This year, Stettler Hockey was able to raise over $10,600 for their organization. Parents and supporters love how delicious the bacon is, making it an easy sell!

In the past, the organization ran several fundraisers throughout the year, but Tersha is super excited that they were able to raise over half of their annual goal of $20,000 fundraising dollars with TeamFund’s Bacon Fundraiser this year.

As a result, Tersha’s job is easier! The association is likely only going to have to do one more fundraiser this year. Popular in the hockey world, they are looking forward to a 50/50 raffle with Rafflebox later this year.

Lakeland Lightning Hockey has achieved a remarkable feat, raising nearly $50,000 with fresh Canadian bacon over the last three years to support its hockey programs.

About Lakeland Lightning Hockey 

Founded by Joel Miller, the Lakeland Lightning Hockey Academy started as a spring team and swiftly evolved into a competitive force in their local league, the Premiere Hockey League. The essence of the club lies in its close-knit community.

Based in Glendon, Alberta, Lakeland Lightning currently has three elite hockey teams. U11, U13 Minor and U13 Major.

The club really is the epitome of a hockey family: Cathy (Joel’s wife) is a trainer for the club, and Joel and Cathy’s two kids, Lyla and Brody each play on one of the U13 teams. Joel Coaches both U13 teams and the U11 team is headed by Coach Blake Villecourt. Blake is a long-time hockey parent who also has two kids in the Academy – Urijah on the U13 team and Izaias on the U11 team.

A strong community and dedicated volunteers are what truly make the programming possible.

We had the opportunity to speak to Shantel, Lakeland Lightning Hockey’s U13 Team Manager, about Lightning Hockey and their experience with TeamFund Fundraising.

For Shantel, taking the team manager role at the club was a “no-brainer,” because Coach Joel makes it so easy. On top of that, many of the families who are part of the hockey community have been part of the academy for 5+ years and the team feels like a big family.

Keeping Lakeland Lightning Hockey Academy Accessible & Affordable with Bacon

As the founder, Joel is passionate about bringing elite hockey to his community. Understanding the financial strain of hockey, It’s also important for Joel that the programming is affordable so that any kid who wants to play can get on the ice.

The club runs raffle tables and small fundraisers to offset some of the hockey costs, but their biggest money-making fundraiser is the Bacon Fundraiser, which they run twice a year.

The Bacon Fundraiser helps cover costs like ice time, tournaments, and buses for trips. 

In Fall 2023, Lakeland Hockey raised over $11,500 in just ONE fundraising campaign.

Since their first bacon fundraiser in 2021, the team has consistently outperformed their previous fundraisers.

Parents and supporters RAVE about how delicious the bacon is. Not only is it fresh and tasty, but it’s cheaper than Costco and comes in convenient packaging that’s easy for families to divvy up in a way that suits them.

This was Shantel’s first time running the bacon fundraiser, and she commends the seamless support provided by Dominique and Susan at TeamFund.

Any questions she had were answered in minutes, and despite the change in organizers over the years, the fundraiser continues to bring in more and more funding each year!

Learn how St. Ambrose School was able to raise over $2000 with school fundraising. With the help of TeamFund, the parent council could focus on promoting the fundraiser without the hassle of paperwork.

St. Ambrose School is part of the Calgary Catholic School District and offers educational programs to students from kindergarten through grade nine. 

Not only that, but St. Ambrose is also part of the Hockey Canada Skills Academy, meaning their students can receive on and off ice training throughout the school year to develop their hockey skills. For the students who aren’t so sport-focused, the school also provides students the opportunity to develop their creative skills with band, art, or drama classes. 

Students at St. Ambrose are able to deepen their learning connections with these experiences, as well as increase their self-confidence in the skills that they are excited about! 

The positive atmosphere and community at St. Ambrose School is made possible by not only staff and students, but their School Council as well, which is made up of passionate parents working with the principals and teachers to work together toward common goals to support their students and children. 

However, not everything is covered with school fees. In order to raise money for the school, the parent council joined forces with TeamFund Fundraising in February 2022 to run a bacon fundraiser.

Their expectations were exceeded, so they returned in the Fall with another bacon fundraiser, and this time decided to combine vendors to include Coco Brooks (pizza!) as well. What student doesn’t love pizza!? 

The council was able to raise over $2,000 to support activities at the school, all while feeding their families at the same time.

Parents are already busy with jobs, picking up their kids from school, attending extra-curricular activities – so the parent council at St. Ambrose School was grateful for the added benefit of an online store for their fundraiser. That means no handing out paper order forms in homeroom, chasing payments, and no finding room in the school to store all the food.
