Landing in Halifax: Meeting Our Partners Who Deliver Fundraising in Nova Scotia

Dominique first touched down in Halifax, crossed into Darmouth, and drove through Windsor and several small towns along the way. The warmth and hospitality were remarkable: open, friendly, and full of community spirit.

One highlight was visiting our supplier, Gordon Food Service in Amherst. They have a massive distribution network reaching from Western to Atlantic Canada. With proven success from our partnerships with Gordon Foods in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, we are excited to offer these easy and profitable fundraisers in a new area.

Their logistics network ensures that fundraisers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick get reliable deliveries five days a week, a game-changer for local schools and teams.

A quick day trip to Shediac during Lobster Fest (eating like a queen!) served a friendliness and pride that made it clear why these communities are such a perfect fit for TeamFund, fundraising people care deeply about supporting one another.

As a Francophone, Dominique was thrilled to connect in French with local organizations in New Brunswick, adding a personal touch to every meeting.

Another highlight was the opportunity to introduce our Fresh Bacon Fundraiser to groups in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The bacon fundraiser has become one of TeamFund’s signature fundraisers and a favourite for people trying out our online fundraising platform for the first time.

New Delivery Zones and what that means for you.

Effective June 1, 2024, we have implemented a new delivery zone mapping system. This will allow us to deliver to more areas and reflect the current delivery fees and fuel charges imposed on us.

We are looking to offer food at affordable prices in rural areas, and this is the best way to do so. 

You can always avoid paying delivery fees when your group sells a minimum of boxes. The minimum number of items sold is per zone (Find your zone here)

What’s new is a per-item fuel surcharge.

Good news: we are choosing this route to avoid price increases.  

We will have five (5) zones. To keep it simple, based on how far your delivery location is from our three main delivery centers, you may be impacted by a fuel surcharge fee at checkout.

These fuel charges are minimal: from $.25 to upwards of $.65 for deliveries over 500 km away from our distribution centers.

Keeping Fundraising Affordable

For the last ten years, we have been committed to providing an accessible and supportive experience at TeamFund. Our practical and profitable food fundraising solutions have helped countless groups raise over $5M.

While the rising cost of fuel makes delivering to some areas more challenging, we are committed to supporting as many groups in Canada as possible with our tasty and innovative online food fundraising.

Changes to Teamfund Deliveries

To ensure we can continue delivering to all of our amazing communities (including Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Winnipeg City), we are making a couple of key changes.

• Item Minimums for Free Delivery

We offer free delivery to all of our groups with a minimum number of items sold based on the delivery zone where your group is located.

• Fuel Surcharge 

Effective June 1, 2024 there will be an additional fuel surcharge per item upon checkout. This fuel surcharge does not come out of profits, rather from the buyer to help cover their portion of the delivery fee. This fuel surcharge is only in Zone 2 to 5. and has a minimal fee of $.25 in Zone 2 to $.65 a unit in Zone 5.

September 30, 2023 commemorates the third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.  

The statutory holiday was enacted by the Canadian government in 2021 to honour the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities who have been impacted. 

Meet Susan: Our Customer Success Manager

Susan Langdon is our dedicated Customer Success Manager here at TeamFund. She initially joined the team in 2020 to assist with deliveries. Over time, her role has expanded, and she is an integral part of our team. (You can say hello in the chatbot!) 

Juggling the responsibilities of being a mother of three children, Susan is a pro at coordinating multiple schedules. As a soccer mom, she is no stranger to fundraising and supports many youth sports teams and groups in their campaigns. 

On top of that, her delicious recipes serve as a delightful addition to our blog – we encourage you to give them a try. They are perfect for busy nights on the go. 

When I asked about her role at TeamFund, Susan candidly remarked, “I don’t think I could go back to an office!” 

TeamFund prioritizes fostering a culture of work-life balance, inclusivity, and participating in meaningful work.

Susan appreciates the flexibility that allows her to prioritize family commitments, like attending her children’s soccer games, and remain connected with the youth sports community as her children transition into adulthood.  

Susan’s Heritage: The Michel Band

Susan’s roots trace back to the Michel band located in Treaty 6 Territory, just outside of the St. Anne area, west of Edmonton. 

The Michel band occupies a unique place in Canadian history, being the only indigenous band to be collectively enfranchised and lose their status as an entire group. 

Presently, over 750 Michel members sit on a “general membership list” of indigenous people in Canada with no indigenous nation or band associated with them. Although members of the Michel band have successfully reclaimed Indian Status as individuals, they continue to struggle to gain unified recognition.

The Impacts of Residential Schools

In the image above, you will see Susan’s mother (the baby). Holding her is Ivie, Susan’s Grandmother. To the left of that is Alice, Susan’s Great-Great-Grandmother. Finally, on the far left is Victoria Calihoo, an important figure in Albertan history.

The Harsh Reality of Residential Schools

Susan’s maternal grandmother was one of many indigenous people in Canada who experienced the hardships of residential schools. She provided a glimpse into the poor conditions endured by indigenous students, relaying a story from one of her cousins. 

Often, students were provided little to eat. The schools aimed to teach indigenous people to integrate into Canadian society, with boys having additional responsibilities to farm the fields. 

Susan can vividly recall a story her grandmother shared about after a long day on the farm; the boys were given a reward for their hard work. The reward was one whole potato at lunch. To them, it was the most cherished meal during their time at the school. 

This story stuck and has been passed down as a reminder of how far things have come, but it’s not that far in the past. So we can’t forget.

While the last residential school in Canada closed its doors in 1996, the impact of these experiences continues. Acknowledging the real intergenerational effects on the descendants of survivors is crucial.  

Susan Believes By Addressing Gaps in Education, We Can Empower Indigenous Communities

For Susan, Truth and Reconciliation is not about blame and guilt. It’s about educating people so that we don’t repeat past mistakes. 

In 2017, a Canada National Reporter poll revealed that 56% of respondents in Alberta didn’t learn about residential schools during their education. 

There is optimism on this front, as the Government of Alberta committed in 2014 to work towards including residential schools in the curriculum. The first iteration of the new curriculum was released in Fall 2023, with revisions to be made in Winter 2024.

Reconnecting With Culture

Beyond educating the general public, it is also essential to provide indigenous people with opportunities to reconnect with the language, culture, and history eroded by the historical attempts to erase indigenous culture through residential schools. 

Susan reconnects with her heritage and fellow band members over Zoom and Facebook Groups. She is excited to be learning Cree, the indigenous language of the Michel people. 

She is also an incredibly creative person in her spare time. She is self-taught in beadwork and enjoys painting. 

By connecting with fellow band members in Facebook Groups, Susan has also learned some of the traditional recipes from her culture. 

“Through these experiences, you’re able to find out who you’re related to, talk to one another, and share our experiences,” Susan emphasizes. Storytelling keeps the memories and culture alive. Through connections and storytelling, we can better understand what reconciliation means.

Fundraising has changed a lot in the last 10 years. When TeamFund started with a mission of making fundraising easier, we didn’t realize just how much hard work it would be. At the same time, it has been an incredibly rewarding journey and we couldn’t have done it without you. 

TeamFund’s Journey to Making Fundraising Easy

Our founder, Dominique Fraser, is an outdoor enthusiast, volunteer, and mom. Not only does she pour passion into TeamFund, but she loves to get involved in the community in her spare time: whether it’s joining a choir or mentoring other entrepreneurs. 

TeamFund started out of a need for fundraising for Dominique’s own children.

Seeking options that supporters actually wanted to buy and were profitable for groups.

Everyone needs to stock their fridges and freezers – so if you’re going to buy meat in bulk at Costco anyway – why not support your kids’ school or sports team at the same time?

While novelty foods like popcorn and chocolate bars can be good once in a while…

Food Safety & Handling: From TeamFund Delivery to Your Freezer!

So, you ran a TeamFund Fundraiser and now it’s time to get ready for delivery day and ensure everyone’s food gets home safe and sound.

Maintaining proper food safety and handling practices is important in keeping your fundraising products fresh and safe to consume. 

All of the items sold in our fundraisers are delivered on a refrigerated truck from a federally-inspected facility. Some of it arrives fresh, and some frozen, depending on the products. 

While our refrigerated trucks keep everything in great condition, minimizing the time between pick-up and proper refrigeration is essential.

Tips for a Successful Delivery Day!

1. Communication, Communication, Communication 

We talk about communication a lot when discussing the fundraising process, but that’s because it’s so important to success!

Your supporters should know already that they will need to pick up the fundraising products they purchase from your fundraiser on your TeamFund delivery date.

Make sure to communicate with all of your supporters the date for your delivery day as well as the time. 

Be sure to include in your communications that if someone cannot come to the delivery time, they must arrange for someone else to pick their products up on their behalf (and store the food safely in the meantime!)

2. Arrive on Time

When we are dealing with fresh food, time is of the essence.

Gather a few volunteers to arrive early to help sort boxes and prepare to hand out orders.

As people arrive for pick-up, boxes can be passed out immediately and be on their way to their home kitchen in no time!

Once orders have been collected, it is crucial to refrigerate your items within 2 hours of your delivery time. Making sure things make it to the fridge and freezer quickly helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. 

At TeamFund, boxes are typically sorted and in cars within an hour of your delivery time! 

**If your home is over an hour from the delivery location, we recommend you have insulated cooler bags or coolers with ice packs ready to keep your items from falling below safe temperatures.

3. Safe Food Storage & Handling

When you get home from your fundraiser drop-off, FREEZE YOUR MEAT unless you plan on eating it within 1-2 days! 

Freezing your meat as soon as possible is important to preserve its flavour and avoid freezer burn. 

When you freeze your food quickly ensures that the water molecules in your food don’t have time to develop into full ice crystals (like snowflakes).

You’ve probably seen these snowflakes on food items that have been frozen for a long time and know from experience that these meats taste the worst because all the moisture has been sucked out.

Freezing your foods quickly avoids the issue of ice crystals and keeps your meats BBQ-ready for much much longer!
